Over 35 years ago San Val began offering book rebinding services to schools and libraries. These accounts purchased many popular school titles as inexpensive paperbacks (and still do). To allow the books to withstand heavy use San Val converted them into long-lasting hardcover editions. San Val guaranteed that its rebound books lasted longer-up to 10 years, saving the customer money over repurchasing the same title every year. We still provide the same service and guarantee!

Book wholesalers turned to San Val to provide the rebinding service they sold to their education accounts. San Val offered and still offers a variety of bookbinding options, giving distributors flexibility to meet their customers' specific needs. Schools turned to San Val to rebind used textbooks to extend the books' usefulness and to save new book purchasing funds. In the 1970s San Val moved its production facilities from the St. Louis area to Steelville, MO-a small community 90 miles away.

The Jaffe family owned a book distributor-Paperback Supply-that used San Val, so it was a natural fit when they purchased the bindery in the mid-1980s and expanded the Steelville facility. (The trade book distributor is now The Booksource.)

In the '90s Neil Jaffe joined the company and saw a new hardcover need to fill ultra-short run hardback orders. At the time a short-run order meant a few thousand units for most bookbinders. Recent digital and POD (print-on-demand) technologies, though, meant a few dozen or several hundred books could be economically printed. However, automated binding equipment can't economically match the small quantity hardcover need. San Val stepped in and now regularly offers edition binding for quantities from 25 units. Most of our casebound orders, though, range from 100-1,000 units.

In 2001 SanVal opened a second production facility in Farmington, MO, south of St. Louis. San Val needed the plant to service its growing prebinding business.

From 1 to 1,000, SanVal is the premier short-run hardcover bookbinder.

Today, San Val provides:
• Library binding services for wholesalers, schools, and libraries
• Prebinding services for wholesalers
• Textbook rebinding for schools and used text brokers
• Print-On-Demand and edition binding for printers, publishers, and individuals
