Does San Val print books?
We do not print books. We provide ultra-short run hardcover binding services. Having partnered with printers on book projects, we can recommend one for you.

What is an "ultra-short run"?
Most hardcover bookbinders consider an order of a few thousand hardcover units as a "short run." Since San Val can bind one copy, a few dozen, or several hundred books as hardcovers we offer "ultra-short run" services.

Does San Val do paperback binding?
No. We only provide casebinding (hardback) services.

What types of bookbinding products and services does San Val provide?
Double-fan adhesive, side sewing, oversewing, and notch binding are our bookbinding methods because all are more durable than traditional trade bindings and are preferred by the schools and libraries that often end up using the books we bind. We offer publishers these quality bindings and the opportunity to produce an ultra-short run order of hardcover books. Using in-house digital printers we print full-color sheets to produce illustrated covers. We also offer individual shrink-wrapping, head/tailbands, and die-stamped covers.

What items does San Val bind?
San Val binds new book titles and theses that have never been bound. We also rebind worn school and library paperbacks, hardcovers and used textbooks. We convert new school or library paperbacks into hardbacks (prebinding). We do not bind periodicals (magazines), pamphlets, or music scores. We also do not create magazine holders or book slipcases. Valuable monographs, brittle volumes, keepsake Bibles and other bookbinding needs require special handling and should be processed by a book conservator. We do not provide those services, but may be able to refer you to a source.

What are San Val's bookbinding requirements?
We can bind volumes up to 12" x 12" and as small as 4" x 4." Regardless of page count, the minimum finished thickness will be 3/8". Books over 2" thick may incur additional binding charges. New books for binding may arrive as printer F&Gs, collated loose sheets, or finished paperbacks (for rebinding into hardcovers). Older books should be clean-not mildewed or waterlogged-with no text material on the inside front or back covers that need to be retained. Top, bottom, and outer page margins should allow trimming of ¼" on each edge." Inner (spine) margins should allow ¼" for trimming and ¼" for sewing. We cannot bind books with brittle pages.

What customer types use San Val?

Book wholesalers, libraries and schools, traditional and print-on-demand (POD) printers, publishers, and individuals who need a small quantity of books hardbound use San Val.

Does San Val rebind books for individuals?
Yes. The minimum order amount will be about $75.00. You'll pay less per unit when you bind more books, but your minimum order amount will remain about $75.00.

Does San Val bind theses?
Yes. The individual order will be about $75.00.

Does San Val rebind Bibles?
Yes. However, individuals often want heirloom or family Bibles rebound that have become damaged and brittle with age. These treasured objects should be treated with the restorative care of book conservationists. San Val does not provide those services. We can rebind Bibles but our binding process requires minimal trimming of the page edges. That's a challenge on Bibles because they often contain slight margins and handwritten notes that could be lost. Bibles are bound in bonded leather or buckram cover fabric.

How long does it take to get my book bound?
Turnaround time varies according to the season, and the scope of the project. When we discuss your project, please let us know when you expect it to be ready for binding and when you'd like to have it returned.

How do I submit a bid quote request?

Contact our sales office via fax, phone or e-mail and we'll gladly provide you a quote for your project.

How can my printer or I submit a book for binding?
You may submit a finished paperback for us to convert into hardcover. We also bind from collated loose sheets and F&Gs (folded and gathered signatures). Please call or have your printer contact us before your job is printed so that we can discuss particular bookbinding requirements.

Does San Val do foil stamping?
Yes. We provide foil stamping either as text or as a design on the fabric cover of your book. We also have black and white ink colors. Other colors may be obtainable. If a stamping die is necessary for a design, you may supply the die or the image so we can have a die made.

May I visit San Val and see how the binding is done?
Absolutely! We encourage visits. San Val operates two plants, each about 90 miles southwest of St. Louis and normally conducts tours in our Steelville facility. We'll happily arrange a visit and plan to meet you in St. Louis to escort you to the bindery. Flights arrive at Lambert/St. Louis International Airport. Driving time to Steelville from Lambert or downtown St. Louis is about 1½-hours each way. We find most visitors spend about 1½-2 hours touring the facility. A regional airport for private planes is also available in Rolla, MO-about 25 miles from our Steelville plant.
